Peruvanam Nadavazhi

It is the home of the Peruvanam pooram and the heaven of the Panchari melam. Located right outside the east gate of Peruvanam Mahadeva temple, the Nadavazhi (walk way) is the venue of the Peruvanam pooram that takes place on Pooyam day of the Peruvanam-Arattupuzha pooram event. Adorned with galleries on either side of the Nadavazhi to seat the audience, the spatial dynamics of the Nadavzhi are specifically suited for the audience to enjoy  the  quality of melam, especially Panchari that is unmatched and cannot be recreated elsewhere.

Peruvanam Pooram is a festival where the entire event is structured in a scientific and disciplined way.  This factor is not limited to the Pooram rituals. It is also applicable  to the Nadavazhi,  where the  pooram is held. The Peruvanam Nadavazhi must have been built with this Pooram in mind and with the intention of being making it a perfect venue for the Pooram. The width is just right for 7 elephants to stand in a row, no less and no more. Similarly, 15 (normally, this is the number of Idanthala artists in a major melam) ‘Uruttu chenda’ artists in a row fill the entire width of Nadavazhi. There are platforms on both sides to sit and watch. If you sit on these platforms, you can touch the elephants. Since they are high platforms, the spectators can sit and watch the Pooram comfortably. The Peruvanam Nadavazhi is the venue for the finest processions/melams, the construction of which is in such a manner that it forms a natural theater for the percussion performances.  The sides of the platform are made of stones. This will make any sound resonate more loudly.

Belief is that, the Panchari melam in its current form, was first held at Peruvanam Nadavazhi, as part of  Urakathamma thiruvadi’s pooram. Similarly, Nettipattam, in its present shape and structure, was introduced first for Cherpu Bhagavathy’s pooram at Peruvanam Nadavazhi.

Before, the melam artist was asked “whether he had performed at Peruvanam Nadavazhi or not”. If answer was “Yes”, then it meant he was a recognized artist. Similarly if an elephant get a chance to participate in pooram at Peruvanam Nadavazhi, it is an honor and that elephant is considered as perfect in every respect. All this proclaims the greatness of the Peruvanam Nadavzhi.

The Poorams of, Kadalassery Pisharikkal Bhagavathy, Arattupuzha Sastha, Chathakudam Sastha, Thottippal Bhagavathy, Urakathamma thiruvadi, Cherpu Bhagavathy and Aykunnu Bhagavathy  are held at Peruvanam Nadavazhi, on Peruvanam Pooram day.
